Onsite BNG habitat management
Where the BNG habitat is on land you keep, we take on the management obligation for the full agreed period, for a fixed fee.
We price on the site area, habitat, condition and management period, and charge one fee with no annual invoices.
- Period
- Thirty years, or in perpetuity
- Fee
- Fixed, paid once
- Monitoring
- Independent ecologists
- Residual liability
- None
What an onsite BNG condition requires
An onsite BNG condition lasts at least thirty years and travels with the consent. It needs annual management and monitoring to a set standard, reported to the Responsible Body and the authority, and there are consequences if it is not done.
Habitat condition declines
The units it was meant to deliver may no longer be valid.
The authority enforces
The authority can impose retrospective conditions and take enforcement action against the consent.
The Responsible Body steps in
Step-in is costly and damages your relationship with the authority.
The liability stays with you
The obligation stays on your balance sheet and passes to your successors in title.
How it works
We apply the same discipline, independent monitoring and Responsible Body oversight as we do on our own habitat banks.
Site assessment and HMMP
We survey the habitat, agree the Habitat Management and Monitoring Plan with the Responsible Body and the authority, and price the full programme as a fixed fee.
Existing HMMP, or we write it
Management agreement
Responsibility transfers to Wild Capital for the full agreed period, and a single payment discharges the liability.
One payment
Management and reporting
Our team delivers the HMMP, including hay cuts, scrub control, invasive species and water levels, and submits the annual returns on your behalf.
Every year of the period
Independent monitoring
Ecologists independent of Wild Capital verify condition against the HMMP targets each year and report to the Responsible Body and the authority.
Management and verification kept separate
Step-in rights
The Responsible Body or local authority can access the endowment and take control if targets are missed, which protects you from enforcement.
Liability devolved from signature
Self-managing compared with Wild Capital
Self-managing
Procuring contractors and ecologists every year, doing the monitoring and reporting yourself and keeping the liability, with exposure to enforcement and rising costs over thirty years.
With Wild Capital
One fixed fee covering works, monitoring, reporting and oversight for the full period. On larger sites the fee can be held as an independent endowment, so the money for management is protected.
What we manage
We manage all the habitat types that commonly appear in onsite BNG conditions.
Species-rich grassland
Hay cuts, selective grazing, botanical surveys and species monitoring.
Wetland and wet grassland
Water level management, silt removal, wader and wildfowl monitoring.
Hedgerow networks
Rotational cutting, gap filling, dormouse and bird monitoring.
Woodland and scrub
Coppicing, ride management, deer control and veteran tree monitoring.
Urban green infrastructure
Green roofs, drainage habitat and amenity grassland conversion.
Species mitigation sites
Receptor habitat for dormouse, newts, Brent goose and reptiles, with licence reporting.
