About the site
Three grassland fields beside Whites Park Equestrian on Newton Lane, Whiteparish, in the New Forest National Character Area close to the National Park boundary. The fields had been grazed by horses and then left, with tall herbs, an old field tree, boundary hedgerows, three ditches and a small stream running north to south through the middle. Broadleaved woodland runs along the western edge. The New Forest and River Avon Special Areas of Conservation are within ten kilometres, and several SSSIs are less than a kilometre away.
Most of the site is being restored to lowland meadow, a priority habitat, with mixed scrub in the north-west, a new species-rich hedgerow with trees along the northern boundary, and the stream and ditches enhanced. The meadow and hedgerow give bats somewhere to feed, including barbastelle from the Mottisfont Bats SAC, which travel up to twenty kilometres to forage; the woodland edge they commute along is kept. The soils are naturally low in nutrients, which suits meadow plants.
Managed under a habitat management and monitoring plan with no public access. The meadow is cut for hay and the arisings removed so nutrients do not build up. Condition is surveyed by independent ecologists and reported to Wiltshire Council.

How this site is secured
What your authority will examine
Who owns the land, what binds it, and who is responsible if the habitat fails.
Here
We own the land freehold and a conservation covenant or planning obligation protects it permanently, with condition independently monitored throughout.
Who stands behind the obligation
- The land
- We own the land freehold, with no lease and no third-party landowner.
- The covenant
- A conservation covenant or planning obligation protecting each site in perpetuity, registered against the title.
- Responsible Body
- An independent Responsible Body or the local authority can step in if we ever fail to deliver.
- The endowment
- Long-term management is funded by an endowment set aside at allocation.
- Financial strength
- We have £56.5m of capital for land and habitat, and are rated Very Low Risk with an international credit score of A. That capital lets us buy land and create habitat before your programme needs it, and fund its management for the long term.
