About the site
About two kilometres north of Great Houghton, at Brierley Common in Barnsley, on the Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire and Yorkshire Coalfield. An arable field with a band of mixed woodland through the middle, part of it recorded as priority deciduous woodland. The southern boundary adjoins West Haigh Wood, 38 hectares of ancient and semi-natural woodland and a Local Nature Reserve, and Howell Wood Country Park is 700 metres to the east.
Most of the arable field is becoming Open Mosaic Habitat on Previously Developed Land, a priority habitat, with species-rich neutral grassland and mixed native scrub alongside. Soil testing confirmed both can reach good condition here. The woodland is being brought from moderate to good condition, including removing rhododendron, and the hedgerows on the western and south-eastern boundaries are being enhanced.
The grassland is cut for hay once a year. The OMH is kept open by scraping and re-levelling no more than a third of it in any season, on a five-to-ten-year rotation, to copy the disturbance it depends on. Monitored every year for the first five years and then at longer intervals, with results reported to Barnsley Council.

How this site is secured
What your authority will examine
Who owns the land, what binds it, and who is responsible if the habitat fails.
Here
We own the land freehold and a conservation covenant or planning obligation protects it permanently, with condition independently monitored throughout.
Who stands behind the obligation
- The land
- We own the land freehold, with no lease and no third-party landowner.
- The covenant
- A conservation covenant or planning obligation protecting each site in perpetuity, registered against the title.
- Responsible Body
- An independent Responsible Body or the local authority can step in if we ever fail to deliver.
- The endowment
- Long-term management is funded by an endowment set aside at allocation.
- Financial strength
- We have £56.5m of capital for land and habitat, and are rated Very Low Risk with an international credit score of A. That capital lets us buy land and create habitat before your programme needs it, and fund its management for the long term.
